Parallels VM Compressor RC Now Available

Parallels is proud to announce the Release Candidate (RC) for Parallels VM Compressor, a powerful, easy to use virtual hard disk management tool that performance optimizes any Parallels, VMware or Microsoft virtual machine by the compressing its hard drive to less than half of its original size.

No matter which virtualization solution you use, Parallels VM Compressor can help you improve virtual machine performance and better manage physical and virtual disk space. The product works seamlessly with any virtual machines built with:

  • Parallels Workstation 2.1 for Windows, Linux or Mac OS X
  • VMware Workstation
  • VMware GSX Server
  • VMware Server
  • Microsoft Virtual PC
  • Microsoft Virtual Server

Tools: ISO Recorder

UPDATE: Check out this other ISO Creator app... it is much simpler to use and does not require an install... How I love "portable apps"

Another great FREE tool to help make our jobs easier. ISO Recorder.

Now, why is this tool important for us virtualizers? How does it fit into the way we work with our virtual infrastructure? It is simple, really. It helps us with creating and editing cd images which are necessary if you use VMware ESX or, they are, at least, very handy if you use any other kind of virtualization software like VMware Workstation or Parallels and so on...

When you are ready to build your first virtual server in ESX, you may find it difficult to run back and forth to the server room just to swap out CDs. This is why we have a /vmimages/ folder on our ESX boxes... to store CD & Floppy images in. But, they problem for some people is how to create them. I started out trying to use my CD burning software to create an image of my Windows 2003 Server disk, but since NERO saw that the disk was copyrighted, it would not create an ISO, only a NERO-specific NRG file. The problem? ESX doesn't know what to do with an NRG file. So I did a little Googling and found this very handy little "power toy." Now, it isn't an official MS power toy, but it works just like one. Very simple install, no program groups, just another option when you right-click on a CD drive. ISO Recorder does do more than I am going to talk about, so if you're interested, please do check out the publisher's site.

First, let's look at the install. It is very simple. Here's some screen captures of each step along the way. It is really a no-brainer.

Once you've gotten past that super-easy step, you can pop your CD in your fastest CD drive and open windows explorer... then just right click on your CD drive like such:

and click on "Create Image from CD". At this point it will bring up the ISO Recorder dialog box:

Be sure you know where you're saving your ISO file. These can be quite large and if you're making a bunch at once, you may find yourself running out of hard drive space quickly. By default, it stores them in your "My Documents" folder. Once you're satisfied with the From: and To: options, click the "Next" button. It will start copying the CD image to your aforespecified location:

And then, depending on the speed of your CD drive, it'll be done in a few minutes or so:

Now that you have your ISO file, use WinSCP to copy it to your ESX box and go to town. A couple things to remember is that you don't want to keep your virtual CD drive connected or you won't be able to VMotion and you may not want to even keep it installed in your virtual pc since just existing, it consumes service console resources.

If you find this tool handy, please be sure to support its publisher. He has a PayPal button (like mine) on his page.

VMware pushes the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

There is a lot of merit to what VMware is doing here. Trust me, I know... We're doing where I work. VMware did a case study on us too...

Besides all the other benefits, I think this is the one that will make this solution take off:

Unlike other server-based solutions that are limited in their ability to provide a complete desktop experience or are limited to specific architectures, VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure includes full PC environments that are familiar to end users and not limited by hardware or location.

Too many people have custom apps that just won't run in a traditional "terminal server" environment.

Read my original story from last year about this...

Asterisk@Home Virtual Machine Updated - v2.8

I've just uploaded the newest virtual machine to the vmwarez download site: Asterisk@Home version 2.8. Here's what is new:

There are a lot of updates in 2.8. We are now using a stock install of SugarCRM with the Asterisk plug-in. This should make upgrades painless. SpanDSP and NV Fax detect are working with FreePBX.org thanks to a small patch. Future versions of FreePBX.org should have full support. As always we have the latest version of Asterisk and the latest versions of lots of other software packages including CentOS and phpMyAdmin.

The old Maintenance page has been replaced with FreePBX.org plug-ins. Security has been tightened and you can pick your own root password during install. As always you can get a working Voice over IP PBX with all the latest add-ons in less than an Hour!

You can download the vm here. It is about 555MB. I have a dedicated 5mbs connection to the 'net for VM downloads, so it is fast if there aren't a ton of people using it all at once. If it seems slow, try back later. Donations are welcome :)

Screen Caps of what it looks like on first boot are located here. If you are not familiar with booting aah in a vm for the first time, it would be worth the read.

USERNAMES AND PASSWORDS:
console: root/password
freepbx/amp: maint/password
flash operator panel: passw0rd
sugar crm: admin/password

Look here for more security info.

Click here for my original post about my use of AAH at my own home...

I recommend looking at NerdVittles and VoIPJots for different things you can do with your AAH box including things like:

Click to call
Teleyapper - the auto dialer, telemarketer style.
The new "Idolizer"
Appointment reminder system
and lots more...

Be sure to donate on their sites too if you use and like their stuff.

Correction - Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk is Free - Just Licensed.

It was brought to my attention that, unlike what I said in this previous post, Microsoft is NOT charging for the use of their Virtual Disk Spec. But they are licensing it. At least that's what it says in this PCWorld article.

Asterisk@Home Virtual Machine Updated - v2.8 Beta1

There's a new version of the popular Free VoIP PBX coming around the corner and it is going to have some pretty exciting changes. AMP (Asterisk Management Portal) has become FreePBX and is in this 2.8 Beta 1.. There are some pretty cool new features that you can read about here: http://www.freepbx.org. Also, the CentOS unerlying operating system has been updated to 4.3, SugarCRM has been updated, The core Asterisk code is up to 1.2.6 and there are some Zaptel updates too.

If you want to see some of these updates and don't want to upgrade your working AAH box, you can check out this article at NerdVittles.

If you just want to play with it, I've created a virtual machine that you can just download and turn on. It will boot up, get an IP address from your DHCP server and you can go to town. Click here to download it. The file is about 478MB... so be patient. Try downloading it at off-peak times if things are slow. I've got a dedicated 5Mb pipe just for these downloads and it seems to get saturated everytime I put out a new vm. Be sure to feel free to donate to cover some of the expenses... but only if you enjoy this site. :)

Once you've downloaded and unziped this file, you can run it in VMware Player, Server or Workstation. I created it in VMware Workstation 5.5.

The first time you run it, you will see this window or one just like it:

Here you want to click Create and then OK. Then the OS will continue to load... before long you'll see this screen:

Kudzu will see that, since you're running this VM from a new location, the MAC address of your NIC has changed and so it thinks you have new hardware. The easiest thing to do is to play along. Press any key to continue.

Now you will have to choose to remove your existing config so that Kudzu can find the new NIC. Click "Remove Configuration" and let's move on.

Now you'll click configure.

and then set the NIC to use DHCP and click OK. At this point, the OS will finish booting and you'll be ready to go.

One last thing that you may notice is that there is one service that fails on boot...

It is the S.M.A.R.T. Hard drive monitor daemon. Don't worry about it... you don't have a smart hard drive while in VM land. If seeing it fail bothers you, you can disable the smart daemon. If you're like me and don't know how to do that, you could install webmin using the instructions at NerdVittles.

Enjoy :)

Microsoft fights back to stay in the virtualization market.

According to this article at "The Register", Microsoft has thrown "three massive bombs into the server virtualization market." Here they are:

  • Microsoft announced that they will support Linux - heheheh
  • They have made their server product free... sooner than expected
  • "And, in a move few thought possible, Microsoft has teamed with the developers of the open source Xen product to gang up on server slicing leader VMware."

Frankly, I'm not surprised. The only thing atypical about this is that M$ has not partnered with VMware before hitting them this hard. :) HOWEVER... I don't think that they even have that great of a chance to truly compete with VMware at the higher-end level. I think that this will get a lot more people into virtualization and once these newbies get their teeth cut, they will desire something more and move over to ESX.

This article goes on to talk about Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk file format and how M$ has licensed it to XenSource - meaning that there was more than likely a monetary transaction involved. So VMware fired back and opened its own VM disk format and made it FREE!

"VMware's chief Diane Greene went so far as to start a new blog just to have a go at Microsoft's maneuvering on the file format front."

And two last quotes that will surely make you want to go read this article:

"You can tell that VMware has become a major target for Microsoft and Xen and one that they're willing to go after together."

"If you weren't paying attention to server virtualization, today's announcements should wake you up. Another battle for your operating system is on in a massive, massive way. And it's getting ugly quick."
