Virtualization Tool-kit

Here's a collection of tools that I use on a day-to-day basis for managing my virtual infrastructure. There are more to come, so check back often, or just subscribe to the vmwarez web feed. If you have any tools that you find useful, please leave details in a comment. I'll add them to the list. So, here it goes:
  • Putty & WinSCP
    Use these for SSHing to your Virtual Machines - and also for copying files to and from ESX
  • VMware's Workstation Disk Mount Utility
    "With the VMware DiskMount utility, a VMware virtual disk file can be mounted as a Windows drive letter for read/write access to the files it contains."
  • LC ISO Creator
    My new favorite ISO creator
  • ISO Recorder
    This is for creating ISO files to use for your virtual machines
  • Ultimate-P2V - A free P2V tool.
    With this one, you can migrate your physical machine to your virtual infrastructure.
  • VMware's Virtual Machine Importer
    "This utility allows you to convert a Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server virtual machine, or Symantec LiveState Recovery image, into a VMware Workstation 4 or 5 virtual machine (the original Virtual PC virtual machine is left untouched)."
  • VM Back's Virtual Floppy Drive
    Lets you create, view and edit floppy drive images for use in your virtual infrastructure.

  • I would definitly recommend SecureFX instead of WinSCP.
    SecureFX from VanDyke Software is about 4 times faster compared to WinSCP.
    Worth every $!

    Virtual Floppy drive. I know floppies are on their way out, but sometimes you still need them. This is a handy little tool that gives you a virtual floppy drive. The image it makes is compatible with VMware.

  • Yes, you can use Acronis True Image to make a backup of the vmware machine and use Acronis Universal Restore to restore it to a physical machine. http://www.acronis.com.sg/enterprise/products/ATIES/universal-restore.html

  • Veeam have release "FastSCP" for VMware ESX. It's a free product but runs significantly faster than WinSCP or the others.

    they claim up to 6 times faster.

    the same base product is also used for their ESX backup which I'm currently evaluating. the backup side has a few flaws, but the FastSCP part works fine.

  • my favourite ISO utility is ImgBurn. written by Lightning UK (the dude who wrote DVD Decrypter).

    I use ImgBurn to create my ISO's which I then copy up to my ESX host. I then use it within my ESX guests to create slipstreamed install media for Windows with embedded service packs, then re-up them back to the ESX host.

    the same software also creates, burns CD's DVD's audio etc. I picked this software a long time ago because it ran rock solid on Vista.

    all free etc.
