Microsoft fights back to stay in the virtualization market.

According to this article at "The Register", Microsoft has thrown "three massive bombs into the server virtualization market." Here they are:

  • Microsoft announced that they will support Linux - heheheh
  • They have made their server product free... sooner than expected
  • "And, in a move few thought possible, Microsoft has teamed with the developers of the open source Xen product to gang up on server slicing leader VMware."

Frankly, I'm not surprised. The only thing atypical about this is that M$ has not partnered with VMware before hitting them this hard. :) HOWEVER... I don't think that they even have that great of a chance to truly compete with VMware at the higher-end level. I think that this will get a lot more people into virtualization and once these newbies get their teeth cut, they will desire something more and move over to ESX.

This article goes on to talk about Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk file format and how M$ has licensed it to XenSource - meaning that there was more than likely a monetary transaction involved. So VMware fired back and opened its own VM disk format and made it FREE!

"VMware's chief Diane Greene went so far as to start a new blog just to have a go at Microsoft's maneuvering on the file format front."

And two last quotes that will surely make you want to go read this article:

"You can tell that VMware has become a major target for Microsoft and Xen and one that they're willing to go after together."

"If you weren't paying attention to server virtualization, today's announcements should wake you up. Another battle for your operating system is on in a massive, massive way. And it's getting ugly quick."
