VMware Server beta - Install Note 3

Welp, I finally got some time to start playing with VMware Server. I uninstalled workstation (which may end up biting me in the tail) and started the Server install. It went through the first few screens just fine, then told me that I need to have IIS installed in order to install the VMware Management Interface. It said that if I want to go ahead and install VMware Server without the Management Interface, I could... Which means that you can probably manage multiple VMware Servers from one management interface? We'll see. Next I am going to install IIS and start over.

  • No, it's the web interface to the server. It's like the GSX web console, or the ESX web console.

    It doesn't allow for multiple server management - you still need VirtualCenter for that.

    The only web console I ever use for VMware is the ESX one, and when you're using VirtualCenter you'll rarely use that. But, it is pretty, so check it out!

  • Yep, you're right. The web interface just allows for remote management. VMware has released VirtualCenter 1.4 that allows management of multiple VMware Server installations. I'm using VC2.0 now and can't see going back :)
