If you want the easiest, most inexpensive way to build virtual appliances to enter into the VMware contest, you should use rBuilder Online (www.rpath.com) from rPath which is free as long as the appliance you build is made available to the community. You can see examples of virtual appliances built using rPath on the VMware site at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/rpath.html
