IPCop Virtual Machine - New ESX Version Available

I've created an ESX version of the IPCop virtual machine. You can download it here. This one is about 96MB.

The add-ons that are already installed in this VM are: urlfilter, advproxy w/ Classroom Extensions & Calamaris Proxy Report Generator.
Also, check out other prebuilt virtual machines on VMWare's Community Virtual Machine Center.
I've used this in a production VMWare ESX installation as a firewall for a hosted server... It works great.
To get to the console, you have to SSH or open the console... The username is root and the pw is vmwarez. Once you're in, you'll need to change the IP addresses to suit your needs... then the web-interface can be accessed on the "private" side by going to http://IPADDRESS:81. The username for that is admin and the pw is also vmwarez.
Enjoy... and if you have any questions, post comments and I'll answer there.

Do you apply the PaX and the grsecurity patches to the vmware image? If not, that would be a wonderful thing to do.

Outstanding work! Kudos!
I'll try this asap.

I tried to import this into vmware ESX and received the following error:
[root@esx1 ESX]# vmkfstools -i IPCop.vmdk vmhba0:1:0:1:IPCop.vmdk
DiskLib_Open() failed. The file specified is not a virtual disk. (13)

I got the same error as the previous commenter. I *think* that the problem is the size of the vmdk. My VMware Linux host detects the file size as larger than 2GB.

I think you need to be running the version that is not made for ESX... You can find it here.

How do you change the green static IP? I don't see the "setup" user. Sorry. Newbie...

Hi,
Just run "setup" from the command prompt. That runs a nice menu-driven program that has lots of options. It is fairly easy to figure out after that. Let us know if you still need help.

Have you tried installing the VMware tools from ESX on this? It stops when it looks for the rc0.d - rc9.d directories which are not a part of this distro. Thanks for the help!!

I have tried, but was not successful. Another guy submitted an IPCop build to the VMWare Virtual Appliance Challenge that is based on the CVS. It has tools installed, but from what I can tell, it has a ton of other stuff too which one might not want on a firewall. Look for it here.

Will this IPCOP vm-version detect my PCI-to-PCMCIA and Novatel HSDPA / 3G card?
By Anonymous, at June 24, 2006 3:14 AM
If your host sees it as a standard network connection, then vmware should give you the option of connecting to it... But the vm will not see it the Novatel device, just a standard vmxnet or pclance ethernet controller.

I am trying to use Network -> Aliases which forces me to use a static IP address. When I do that, I lose the default gateway and cannot ping the RED interface. I have tried setting the default route but while I can then ping the RED interface I still cannot access the Alias IP addresses I setup. Any ideas?
