UPDATED 2/4/2006 - VM is now running Asterisk@Home 2.5 w/ updates applied according to "Soup to Nuts" article at NerdVittles

I've been playing with Asterisk at Home for a couple months now... I have one running at home on an older Dell Optiplex 900MHz w/ 512MB ram & a 20GB hard drive.

Click picture to download a full sized PDF.

But to do testing, I run a second one in VMWare Workstation. This first go-around, I've posted a plain-jane fresh install of Asterisk@Home version 2.4 for download. It was created in VMWare Workstation 5.5 and will run fine in VMWare's VM Player & VMware Server. I don't recommend running a production Asterisk box in a virtual machine because of timing issues.

Just download this zip file, unzip it and run the vmx file in either VMWare Player or VMWare Workstation 5.5. The VMDK file is about 1.5GB when uncompressed.

The zip file is about 600mb in size. If you were to install this yourself off the original ISO, you'd have to download a 500mb ISO and then go through the very long install. The part that takes the longest is when it compiles all the Asterisk bits and pieces... On a very fast desktop, this takes about 40 minutes... This VM is ready to go once you get it uncompressed. Consider this a huge time saver :)

To read more about AAH, go to http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net

To read more about Asterisk go to http://www.asterisk.org

Lots of good articles are available at www.voip-info.org or www.nerdvittles.com and a new one at www.voipjots.com.

To log onto this virtual asterisk at home box, the console user is root and pw is password. the web username is maint and the pw is password.

For a nice, free softphone to use with Asterisk@Home, try Idefisk: available here. The best part about it is that it does not require install. I just copied the files onto my USB drive and that way I can access my home PBX from anywhere.

If you need a headset for this, HippoDeals has nice stereo ones for $3.00 ea.

Asterisk@Home Features:

  • Asterisk 1.2
  • Flash Operator Panel 0.24
  • Festival Speech Engine version 1.96
  • weather agi scripts
  • wakeup calls
  • Integrated WebMeetMe GUI
  • AMP-1.10.010 BETA
  • CentOS 4.2
  • SugarCRM with Cisco XML Services interface + Click to Dial
  • Native Music On Hold
  • Fax support (spanDSP)
  • xPL support
  • Digium card auto-config

As time permits, I'll trick-out this VM with lots of extras... for now, it is just a standard install.

Also, note that this Asterisk@Home install cannot use any hardware interfaces. E.G. Digium boards. You can, however, use any IP based ATAs, soft Phones, VoIP phones, etc.

  • awesome work,
    thanks!

  • After looking at your network diagram and thinking about going 100% voip i have a few thoughts im chewing on

for backup an apc hooked up to the cable or dsl modem and a hardwired aix phone should last a long time ifs thats all thats hooked up

the phone service very rarely goes down as is the power or my provider so in the event everything is down what to do in a emergancy: all cell phones no matter if there subscibed or not must access 911 (in canada anyways)

why are you using vondage ? you really dont need a pbx with them as they provide everything

many thanks for the vm image

By Anonymous, at February 06, 2006 6:36 PM

  • Thanks for the image, i was just wondering if there's a mirror or maybe a .torrent file? Been trying to download it, but cant get more than 1k/sec

By Anonymous, at February 07, 2006 4:03 PM

  • I don't know of any torrents for it... but www.nerdvittles.com does have it hosted there too.

By Jim, at February 07, 2006 5:17 PM

  • Can this image be used on a ESX Server? If not, is there a way to change the file format to one that ESX could load?

By Anonymous, at February 07, 2006 7:39 PM

  • This image cannot because it is using an IDE drive. I've tried to install Asterisk@Home on ESX, but the CentOS build did not support scsi drives. If anyone knows how to get around that, I'd love to try it.

By Jim, at February 07, 2006 9:07 PM

  • Yeah, I currently have a Asterisk@home 1.x server in production and its running fine, however i tried installing a 2.x on a EXS and I couldnt get it to install. I'll see what i can do to get it to boot and i'll let you know

  • > I don't know of any torrents for it... but www.nerdvittles.com does have it hosted there too.
Anyone know where to find it on NerdVittles? Downloads from this site run extremely slowly and then time out, wasting bandwidth.
    Thanks!

  • That worked. Thank you! :-)

By Anonymous, at February 08, 2006 2:03 PM

  • Ok I figured out a way to get it installed, when creating the machine, just specify the virtual HDD to use IDE instead of SCSI, and it should work without a prob. I'll try to get a complete image and i'll post a torrent when i get it tweaked as I wanted (using some guides found on other pages)

By Anonymous, at February 08, 2006 6:23 PM

  • Thank you very much for this -- looking forward to your upgraded "tweaked" version.

ps: Thank you for not clearing the command shell buffer as I have a better idea in what you did to update it -- and I think it is a tad more trustworthy release :-)
Is there anywhy to increase the buffer size for your tweaked version too?

By Anonymous, at February 13, 2006 1:23 PM

  • FYI: I've been running AAH22 under vmware on a dual xeon 3.2Ghz without any timing issues.

By Anonymous, at February 13, 2006 1:27 PM

  • my virtual server beta says VMware tools is not installed. Are you going to be including VMware tools with the machine in future releases?

By Anonymous, at February 13, 2006 1:30 PM

  • any recommendations on termination providers?
i was able to use asterisk to make outbound calls, just not inbound ones.

i think i was using voicepulse or something like that

  • Can you give us an update version of the VM that would include A2Billing 3.0?

By Anonymous, at February 16, 2006 10:57 AM

  • I'll get to work on it... next release of this vm should be in about a week.

By Jim, at February 16, 2006 12:09 PM

  • Nice! hopefully the instructions posted at Nerd Vittles will also work with your next release for us the newbies to the Linux world.

By Anonymous, at February 16, 2006 2:07 PM

  • Hi, this is great, thanks. I was trying to log on SugarCRM, but cannot guess the right credentials. Can you help with that?

    Thanks
    Simone

  • Thanks for the great VM! How to logon to CRM and Flash Panel ?

By Anonymous, at February 18, 2006 12:18 AM

  • the default username and password for sugar crm as delivered with asterisk@home is admin and password. The default security key for the flash panel is passw0rd (that's a zero). HTH.

By Jim, at February 18, 2006 1:18 PM

  • Ok I have the same problem I can not get into the crm with the password given before any hints ;)

  • Can anyone tell me how I can access the web gui from the virtual machine?

    thanks

By Anonymous, at February 20, 2006 3:50 PM

  • You can't unless you install x or want to look at the "web gui" using lynx :)... use a browser on your physical machine or on another vm. HTH

By Jim, at February 20, 2006 8:40 PM

  • Can Asterix use Altigen cards? I have a Triton Voip card and several of their trunk interface cards that I'd like to put to use.

By Scottie Sharpe, at February 21, 2006 7:43 PM

  • I'm not sure.... I'm more of a VMware expert than I am an Asterisk. I'd check over at www.voipjots.com or www.nerdvittles.com.

By Jim, at February 21, 2006 10:21 PM

  • Hi,

the login with username root and password vmwarez does not work.
Wich is the the right password to log into the VM of A@H ?

By Anonymous, at February 24, 2006 9:23 AM

  • Hi Jim.. Thanks for this vmware image. I have finally got working after buying a Linksys WRT54g router.

Note: some routers have problems with sip traffic so you won't be able to register with your sip provider.

Only problem I have is, physical memory keeps hitting 97%- 99% and then my swap file kicks in at 5%. This problem occurs with my vmware pc set to 128mb / 256mb and even 512mb.. just a matter of time. ie. depending on how many calls I make. Why is this? Does AAH home have to use up all physical memory before using swap file?? Why can't it use a good combination like windows xp? ie. 60% physical memory and 256mb swap file etc.

  • Hi Jim! Thanks for this VMWARE image. I finally got working after buying a Linksys WRT54g router.

I have a problem, my physical memory keeps hitting 97%-99% not matter how much memory I allocate to my VMWARE PC. Tried 128/256/512mb - same problem.. just a matter of time.. depending on number of calls made. My swap file only kicks in at 4%-6% after physical memory is at 97% ?? Why is this? Why can't AAH manage its memory better.. ie like xp.. 50% physical and say 400mb swap file.. instead of eating up all the physical memory. I have to keep rebooting VMWARE PC to free up memory!!

  • Does anyone know how to expose my web gui for A@H to the internet? I want to use a Dynamic DNS service to point to my VM's IP address to access the GUI?

    Example:

Setting router ip address XX.XXX.XX.X:5478 to 192.XXX.XX.X:80 but I don't think that the VM is listening to that port which I would think it is because I can type 192.XXX.XX.X inside my network and reach the web gui....

    ANY help is appreciated!

  • OK, this new release of the AAH2.6 VM has all password UNCHANGED from the base install. That should fix any of these problems. Sorry about that.

By Anonymous, at March 04, 2006 8:17 AM

  • "OK, this new release of the AAH2.6 VM has all password UNCHANGED from the base install." Default password for most stuff is "password" but for the Flash Panel, I think it is "passw0rd"

I'll update the article to mention that so that it is more clear. HTH

  • I'm having trouble getting the network to function in wmware...
Is it my hw-router or the system running wmware that are to asign the ip-adress?

By Anonymous, at March 07, 2006 4:57 PM

  • hi all, vmware can work with asterisk and digum cards (pci slot) ??? sorry for my english.

By fjpa, at March 12, 2006 6:25 PM

  • Nope, it can only work with network attached devices.

By Jim, at March 12, 2006 8:04 PM

  • Can this distro work with VMWare Server (free, currently in beta)?

Motivation: We currently have an Asterisk@Home server that is doing dual duty also running http://open-dent.com/.

Updating Asterisk becomes a real pain, but being able to run Asterisk in a VM might reduce the hassle to restoring the (quite simple) configuration after each update.

Thanks for putting this distro together and keeping it updated!

By Anonymous, at March 13, 2006 1:09 AM

  • Yep, I'm pretty sure it will work with VMware Server. I have been considering doing the same thing with my AAH box at home for the exact same reason... Updating from rev to rev is a pain in the a**.

  • Hi Everyone,

I'm not a expert in Linux but was able to get everything up and running and was able to make a successful call from my vmware Asterisk box. After I was satisfy with an hour's work, I rebooted the my vmware then try to ping my router again as before, to my surprise, it stopped pinging.
I checked the adaptor interface, the settings are correct.

Does anyone know where the problem is?

Tried setting the ethernet adaptor to NAT, Bridge, and host.

    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Hello all,

I've start running the Asterisk at Home on my VMWare Server for testing purpose.

I can login to my asterisk box, but how can I create an account for my users?

Can I make a call to my cell phone? Or just internally call only?

I might need more advice on Asterisk software & how does it works....

    Thanks

By Anonymous, at April 04, 2006 11:12 AM

  • I used Visio 2003 and Acrobat for these diagrams.

  • I just installed your latest 2.7 release using vmware server Beta 2. It works awsome with the server version with no issues. Actually you don't even know it's there from the desktop and what's great is that I can access the console from any computer on my network. It definately is a viable solution for a softphone or IP phone setup. I am testing it to see how stable it is. I have noticed some console stability problems with the server console but not with the machine. As far as resources it seems to run just fine. I allocated 300mb of memory out of my 2g and it doesn't seem to slow down my machine one bit! I think the vmware server is a better approach than player. Player seems to run with in the current GUI when server seems to run indipendant so to speak. I was even joking that someone using my computer wouldn't even know that I am running AHH. Cool and thanks for the great effort!!!!! This is also an awsome install for Newbies to Linux and AHH alike. I am well versed in Linux but not AHH and this helped the learning curve. I would suggest that Newbies take the time and install Webmin. Takes the hassle out of Linux administration. Nerd Vittles has instructions on how to set it up....EB

  • Hello you said that right now, you cannot use digium cards with the latest release of aah and vmware, is that because a vmware limitation, or because of the install ?

In the future, could there be support for using digium cards ?

    Thnx.

By Anonymous, at April 26, 2006 1:42 PM

  • It is a virtualization issue. I bet you will never be able to use digium devices in vmware.

  • Any chance you're going to update this to TrixBox 1.1 which had a lot less bugs? It also upgrades much easier. Thanks for all the hard work on this!!

By Anonymous, at July 19, 2006 8:41 AM

  • Jim,
We've posted an "enhanced" (we hope) VMware image of TrixBox 1.1.1 which is preconfigured for newbies. Got any spare bandwidth??
